Virtual U3A

We were approached by the committee of the vU3A and asked to put this advert on our web site and in our Newsletter. The committee have looked at their site and one of us has joined, and we can vouch that this is a bona fide group within the U3A organisation. They have been established for a few years and have achieved quite a lot, but they are seeking to increase their membership to do even better.

The Virtual U3A (vU3a), which went live in January 2009, is an online-only U3A, affiliated to the Third Age Trust. One of its principal aims is to provide the U3A experience for those who are rendered isolated in some way by circumstances or geography and unable to play a full part in a normal U3A. More information is available on the public website where one can also apply for membership. Why not pay it a visit? And if you know of anyone who might benefit, please pass the information on.

Since this is an on-line only based U3A, you will need basic computer skills; but it may be a suitable substitute for those of our members who can no longer get along to meetings, or those in areas where there is currently no local U3A to attend. Current membership is £12 per annum.

Smoke alarms

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to test their smoke alarms when they put their clocks back on Sunday October 27.

At our September meeting we had a short talk from the Essex Fire Service on safety in the home and how the Fire Service can help.

If you don’t have any fire detection equipment installed you may be eligible for a free instalation. In any event you can get a free home fire safety visit by calling 0845 601 2495 or emailing, see further at this page which also conatains links for several down-loadable safety leaflets.

Their home page has a map showing recent incidents which is worth checking before a journey so that an alternative route can be planned in the event of a Road Traffic incident causing road closure, or just to avoid congestion.
